Description
Native to Mexico and northern South America, papaya has become naturalized throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Commonly known as ‘Papita’ is India, papaya is a medium to large sized, oval, or pear-shaped fruit. Papaya is a thin skinned orange-green fruit. Papaya is mainly consumed for it’s pulp which is yellow to orange in colour. Famous for the juicy texture and sweet taste of it’s pulp, papaya contains a cavity inside accommodating several large, dark brown coloured seeds with a spherical shape. Dried seeds of papaya can also be used.
Nutritional Content
- Papayas contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Diets high in antioxidants may reduce the risk of heart disease.
- The vitamin C and lycopene in papaya protect your skin and may help reduce these signs of aging.
- Papaya acts as a remedy for constipation and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Storage – Shelf Life
Keep the ripe papayas in a bag and refrigerate for a week as the ripe ones turn mushy rapidly.
Papayas can be eaten fresh after discarding the seeds. They can be tossed into salads and custards.
Also, they can be blended into juices, lassis, milkshakes and for preparing delicious desserts.
